Welcome to the 3rd Iran Petrochemical Value Chain Summit (IPS) - “Methanol, Ethylene, Propylene, Aromatics” Technology & Investment”, organized by IICIC under patronage of Iran National Petrochemical Company (NPC), taking place on 12 - 14 July, 2025 at Research Institute of Petroleum Industry International Conference Center in Tehran.

Human resources are limited, and global competition among companies to capture a larger market share has intensified. Having an effective competitive strategy is essential for each industry. The proliferation of enterprises and innovative production methods has increased and accelerated the use of resources. The competition among companies for acquiring more resources has risen significantly. On the other hand, companies are seeking ways to create competitive advantages by reducing production costs and achieving higher profits (value added) in their production processes.

The production process of a product consists of many diverse and complex stages that are interconnected in a chain, allowing raw materials to be transformed into various final products that reach consumers.

In the past, there was a theoretical perspective regarding the value chain of production, which stated that the process of producing a product globally is fragmented, with each segment performed in a different country or region. This entire process is referred to as the global value chain of that product, connecting countries and regions of the world through international trade along this chain. Joining this chain means sustainable participation in global production. The closer a country is to the final stages of a global value chain, the more value it creates in the produced product, thus gaining greater benefits.

This theory changed with the emergence of developing countries like China. Currently, many countries are seeking to complete the value chain and produce final products within their own borders, thereby strengthening their positions in global trade.

Preventing the sale of raw materials, optimally utilizing existing human resources, energy, and infrastructure, creating new job opportunities, growing trade capacity, and dealing with international limitations in accessing new technologies will guide us toward leveraging the existing capacities in the country and completing the value chain of production up to the final product. It should be noted that this concept does not equate to self-sufficiency; rather, products are produced for export while also meeting domestic needs.

Currently, there have been significant investments in upstream industries, as well as in energy, transportation, and telecommunications infrastructure, which have created favorable opportunities for downstream investments. It is worth mentioning that as we move toward producing downstream products, the capital required for producing high value-added products also decreases and becomes more easily accessible.

One of the goals of this conference is to introduce the existing opportunities in the country, clarify the current situation in each industry, and create a roadmap for the industries. Additionally, the role of spatial planning in creating a value chain and converting it into opportunities compared to other competitors will be discussed and examined.

In the conference on the development of the petrochemical value chain, identifying existing challenges in value chain development and introducing opportunities and strengths for utilization will be addressed, along with providing operational solutions to overcome these challenges. Clearly, the detailed identification of challenges is the first step towards discovering solutions and implementing them, and following the objectives of the final statement of the conference until results are achieved will certainly be considered in annual conferences.
